The Willian failure
Arsenal announced the signing of Willian from Chelsea in the summer of 2020 and it looked to be a decent acquisition considering there was no attached transfer fee.
The Brazilian international joined on a three-year contract and was to provide depth for the wide positions mainly being occupied by Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe.
However, Arteta lent very heavily on the wide player and his experience to drag them out of some difficult situations caused by the club’s poor form in the first half of the campaign. This took game time away from the record signing of Pepe and for little reward as Willian failed to score a single goal until May.
His wages are reported to be at £7.2 million per season. A staggering £20 million-plus across his entire contract.
There were suggestions he could move away this summer to the MLS however that move reportedly broke down, which sparked some satiric reactions from the footballing community.
Good news for Arsenal fans!
Willian’s potential deal with Inter Miami has apparently collapsed after the winger demanded more than double of what top earner Gonzalo Higuain is paid.

Willian future still away from Arsenal
However, despite the recent failures to sell the player, it is still very much the intention of both Arsenal and Willian to figure out a departure.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano said that it is a ‘work in progress’ and that there could be developments ‘In the next weeks.’
Two months later, still same plans for Willian: he’s expected to leave Arsenal this summer once the right proposal will arrive. 🇧🇷 #AFC
Work in progress with his agent to find the best solution in the next weeks. Arsenal board now waiting too. https://t.co/syoUu8ec5e

Romano had previously committed to the understanding that Willian would “100%” be leaving the club this summer.
.@FabrizioRomano: “Willian is leaving the club, I want to confirm that he is 100% leaving the club. At the moment there is nothing going on with other English clubs, but he’s leaving the club 100%, Willian is going to leave” #Arsenal pic.twitter.com/MjzNbUBwlZ

Not what you might describe as an ambiguous statement but will he be right?
Willian did play in the 2-1 preseason loss to Hibs and looked lacking in match fitness.
