Raheem Sterling suggests he has received ‘unfair flak’ whilst playing for England

Raheem Sterling impressing at Euro 2020

England are, of course, having a superb Euro 2020 and have made it to the competition’s semi-final stage for just the second time in their history.

During the tournament, a number of players have stood out for the Three Lions.

Kalvin Phillips, Luke Shaw and Harry Kane in recent games have put on some fine displays.

Perhaps England’s player of the tournament so far, though, has been Raheem Sterling.

Sterling scored England’s only two goals in the group stage this year, earning valuable wins vs Croatia and the Czech Republic.

The Manchester City man then scored the opener as England saw off Germany in the last 16 before then providing the assist for Harry Kane’s opener vs Ukraine in the quarter-finals.

Whilst Sterling has been widely praised of late, however, he has not always been the most beloved England star over the years, especially from certain areas of the media.

Now, Sterling has opened up on the what he described as the ‘unfair flak’ he has previously received whilst with England:

“It’s not been an easy road with the national team.

“In the past, I would say unfair flak I would get before even touching a ball. As a young person it was difficult to deal with.

“In life and in football, you tend to have to challenge yourself and take it for what it is. You can’t be down on yourself, you have to push yourself even more, and that’s what I have been doing. I think that is one of my best traits.”
